Citizen access to postal services – a precursor for socio-economic growth

In a recently published report, the UPU presents a compelling case for the postal sector’s contribution to economic growth (State of the Postal Sector 2023). In the hypothetical scenario of a complete absence of postal infrastructure, a country’s annual GDP would experience a median reduction of 6.96%. This highlights the critical role that postal services play in supporting national economies.

The analysis presented in this policy brief goes beyond the economic factor to show that the postal sector also makes a significant contribution towards the achievement of national SDGs.

As a final note, it can clearly be communicated to regulatory and other policy-making bodies that the downsizing or closing of postal offices should not be a treated as a mere business decision. The far-reaching consequences for a country's overall growth and sustainable development must be carefully considered.
