Sidebar: Inside the Universal Postal Union

Sandrine Diffo is a quality assurance systems lead software developer in the UPU’s cutting edge Postal Technology Centre (PTC). Her vital work includes monitoring and controlling the quality of electronic data interchange messages or EDI. EDI uses a standard known as EDIFACT, which allows the international postal system to exchange mass data on the dispatch of postal items, carrier consignments and other important information.

PTC is the operational arm of the Telematics Cooperative assisting Posts globally in how to use new technologies and improve and expand their services. The centre develops technological applications and software solutions for UPU member countries. PTC also applies advanced technology to promote the efficiency of postal operators in an increasingly competitive market. Aside from its other projects, the centre manages three main activities: Post*Net, enabling the world’s postal operators to exchange standard EDI messages; the International Postal System, an integrated international mail management system; and the International Financial System, a software application for international money order services.
