In 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) commemorated its 150th anniversary with a series of events and initiatives on the theme of “150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations”. These occasions underscored the UPU’s enduring commitment to global communication and development for diverse audiences worldwide.
Historians examined the evolution of a unified postal territoryThe anniversary celebrations began with the UPU’s first-ever international historians’ colloquium, held on 1 and 2 February at the UPU International Bureau in Berne. Organized in partnership with France’s La Poste Group, La Poste Historical Committee (CHP) and the SIRICE laboratory, the event brought together 40 historians, academics and philatelists from more than 16 countries.
On the theme of “Achieving ‘a single postal territory’: A global promise – past and present”, the colloquium discussions explored the UPU’s historical achievements and its evolving role in shaping global postal systems, setting the tone for a year of reflection and innovation. It also featured a special philatelic exhibition, presenting stamps issued for the UPU’s 75th, 100th and 125th anniversaries, alongside a collection of approximately 8,000 inaugural stamp issues dating back to 1840. Berne Museums Night: Exhibiting postal heritage to the public
On 15 March, the UPU participated in Berne Museums Night, opening the doors of the International Bureau to visitors after dark. The event offered a unique opportunity for attendees to explore the rich history of the postal sector. Highlights included rare philatelic displays showcasing valuable and historic stamps, postal-themed film screenings celebrating the sector’s legacy, and interactive children’s sessions where young participants played the role of country delegates in a mock plenary meeting. Guests also had the chance to send personalized postcards, as part of an activity hosted in collaboration with Swiss Post.
By engaging directly with the public, particularly within the Bernese community where the UPU has been headquartered for a century and a half, the event captured the organization’s longstanding mission of connecting people worldwide. It also fostered a greater appreciation for the cultural and historical significance of postal heritage. (Watch the video of the event here.)
Frauenlauf Women’s Race: Promoting women’s empowerment, inclusion and well-being

UPU staff, joined by colleagues from Swiss Post wearing commemorative 150th anniversary T-shirts, took part in the race amid the city’s vibrant and festive atmosphere.
In addition to participating in the race, the UPU hosted a booth to share its work on gender equity. Visitors took part in interactive activities with a chance to win prizes, further progressing the UPU’s mission. This collaboration not only celebrated the UPU’s milestone anniversary, but also fostered a sense of community, promoting inclusivity, empowering women and encouraging well-being through sport.
