2010 session opens

The Council of Administration (CA) has started with a packed agenda, with delegates set to tackle themes from regulation to addressing.

The Postal Operations Council and the Consultative Committee are also holding some meetings during the next three weeks.

Up to 1,000 attendees from across the globe will be participating in 129 meetings organized by 54 different committees. Some 200 documents will be at their disposal.

Postal security and mobile telephony dominated the CA’s first day. In the latter, one area of focus was the sending of lithium batteries through the post. At the mobile payment workshop, delegates learnt about offering postal money orders through mobile telephones.

In coming weeks, delegates will also explore issues around the reform of the UPU, discuss a proposed draft for a new world postal strategy to be presented at the 2012 Doha Congress, and continue work on developing the .post top-level domain platform for the postal sector.

Two major conferences are also planned during the CA. An addressing conference on November 9 will see private and public postal stakeholders discuss issues in this field. On November 11, delegates interested in regulation can attend a special forum.

On a separate note, the winner of the UPU’s 2010 International Letter-Writing Competition will come to Bern to attend an award ceremony in her honour. Viet Nam’s Ho Thi Hieu Hien, 11, will receive her prize for her composition on AIDS from the UPU director general on November 12.
