Akio Miyaji wins leadership award

Akio Miyaji, the UPU’s coordinator for quality of service, has won a leadership award this week during the ID WORLD International Congress in Milan, Italy.

The ID WORLD International Congress is one of the most comprehensive events to showcase the evolving world of RFID, biometrics and smart card technologies.

Miyaji, a Japanese employee at UPU headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, was recognized for playing a key role in successfully developing and launching the UPU’s Global Monitoring System, a new tracking program for international letterpost that relies on RFID portals and technology.

The GMS uses affordable RFID technology that is accessible to every Post, from industrialized countries and developing ones. It is used to measure letter-post service quality against established domestic standards.

The GMS as one of the most important quality of service improvement projects ever launched by the UPU.

Thanks to a design architecture based on open standards, the GMS is not tied down to any specific RFID technology, and provides users with the flexibility to integrate the GMS with their internal measurement systems.

The Posts of 21 countries are currently participating in the system, and dozens more intend to join in the coming months.
