As a UN specialized agency, the UPU took part in the lead-up to the Bali Conference by helping to publicize the current and future role of the UN agencies, funds and programmes involved in the fight against global warming.
"The Bali roadmap is a pivotal first step towards an agreement that can address the threat of climate change, the defining challenge of our time", declared UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, at the conclusion of the conference, which brought together 187 countries and many international organizations.
The Secretary-General said that three major objectives had been achieved: launching worldwide negotiations on climate change, establishing a timeline and reaching a comprehensive agreement to conclude those negotiations by 2009.
Transport, waste and energy consumption: the postal sector was not excluded from the debate on the impact that economic activity had on the environment. This is why the UPU, through its Environment and Sustainable Development Project Group, is striving to make its 191 member countries and postal sector partners more aware of environmental problems by promoting effective policies and the exchange of best practices aimed at protecting the environment.
