Press Release on key UPU meetings during COVID-19

To fulfil its mandate of helping to improve postal activities worldwide, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) will this week hold two essential meetings at its headquarters in Bern, Switzerland.

“There is a need for the postal community to meet and to discuss how the industry can be catalyzed to meet the extraordinary needs of customers and governments during these difficult times,” said Bishar A. Hussein, Director General of the UPU.

From 1-2 December, the UPU’s Postal Operations Council (POC), consisting of a chair and 40 member countries, meets to discuss how posts can modernize and upgrade their postal products and services. The body meets biannually and makes recommendations to member countries on the delivery of uniform postal practices.

Afterwards, from 3-4 December, the UPU’s Council of Administration (CA) meets. The CA is responsible for the continuity of the UN specialized agency’s work between postal Congresses, held every four years. During its biannual meetings, the CA approves the UPU’s budget and coordinates assistance between its member countries.

“Both the CA and POC are essential to the smooth running of the Universal Postal Union. I look forward to welcoming the representatives to Bern. There is much work to be done,” said Mr. Hussein.
